Linux To Power New Nokia Phones

linux logo
Nokia, the world's top mobile phone maker, expects the role of the Linux operating system in its product portfolio to increase as the role of its Internet-focused devices grows. Linux has had little success on cellphones so far mainly due to the lack of calling functionality. Nokia hopes to change all that in the coming mobile phone models.

Nokia has used Linux for years in its Internet tablets, large phone-like devices used to access Internet on the go, but it lacks calling functionality. Nokia hopes to expand that calling functionality range and believes that the role of Linux will grow.

Linux is an open source operating system which is available to the public to be used, revised and shared, which means it has a large developer community which could result in more attractive programs and lower costs for Nokia.

Right now, Nokia cellphones are built on the Symbian operating system well ahead of competitor Microsoft's Windows Mobile in market share.

Nokia's cellphone maker competitors Vodafone, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung Electronics, Huawei and LG Electronics, have also joined Linux alliances and also plans on a cellphone built on the Linux Open Source platform.

Certificate Expired error Trick

Have you ever wanted to install a Nokia phone theme or apps but everytime you do so, it says "Certificate Expired?". Fret no more, you can now install that Iron Man theme or the latest fancy mobile app you ever so wished.

Some software particularly of Symbian 60 version 3 gives "Certificate Expired" error. Isn't it annoying? The simple trick to overcome this is when you install those applications are:

1. Change your Nokia cellphone's date to Year 2006 or even lower,

2. After changing the date, that's the only time you install the application, and

3. After its installed change the date back to (i.e. 2008 )

Want more? That's it really..enjoy your new app or theme.

Install Asia Maps in your Nokia

Install Asian and country specific India maps to your Nokia maps capable phone or even non-Nokia phones that are maps capable. Here's how:

1. Download these maps:

English

2. Unzip the downloaded map files and drop them into the appropriate folders on your memory card.

3. On Nokia the folder structure is cities with a subfolder called diskcache, filled with subfolders called 0 to 9 and a to f, and each of these folders have a series of subfolders 0 to 9 and a to f of their own.

4. Map files have the extension .cdt. Example:

[memory card]\cities\diskcache\6\d\filename.cdt.

5. On some Nokia phones maps are stored in:

\Private\20001f63\diskcache\6\d\filename.cdt.

6. You may need to tell your computer to show hidden files and folders.

7. Voices for all versions of Nokia Maps.[memory card]\cities\english\etc.

That's it. Enjoy!

Standalone RSS feed readers for Mobile Phones

If you want a standalone RSS feed reader application for your Nokia capable phones rather than the Web-based Mippin, there are two free apps to do just that.

1. Viigo

Viigo is a standalone application that gives you quick access to news, sports, entertainment, weather, markets, blogs, or any RSS feed that you want. It has a well-organized channel library that lets you select from hundreds of sources of information. Navigation is efficient and easy.

If you’re accessing a news source, for example, Viigo gives you a handy list of the headlines. Clicking on a headline brings up a capsule summary. You can then elect to view the whole article, which is nicely formatted for the small screen of your Nokia device. Viigo, unlike Plusmo, grabs the whole article. In general, I like the interface and the presentation of content. You can download Viigo at viigo.com.

2. NewsGator Go for Windows Mobile

Newsgator
was recently released as a freebie after having been a
commercial product. This application gives you the ability to track and
manage all your RSS content on your mobile device. It can also play
streaming audio and video. You can download Newsgator Go at newsgator.com.

My Nokia 5310 Experience

Last saturday, me and my wife decided to buy new phones - gift namin para sa mga sarili namin. hehehe.

So I ask the promo girl where can I buy this phone at sabi nya sa Nokia Store sa 4th floor halos katabi lang ng jolibee papuntang cinema.

Pinagpilian namin kasi K810i or Nokia 5610 XpressMusic. Tumingin din kami ng Motorola and Samsung but since di kami masyado familiar sa models nila.

I take a 2nd look sa unit na 'to at napilitan kami pumunta sa Nokia Store sa 4th Floor.

Ang price kasi sa ibang store eh Php 13,250.00 but I not sure kung legit store sila.

So sabi ko, sige kukuha ako ng 2 units (red and blue). Pero walang stock ng blue so no choice 2 red units binigay sa akin.

While preparing the items, sabi nung girl at nung isa pang guy na kausap ko, kaka-launch palang nitong model na 'to last friday sa Makati.

So no choice ako. Hehehe.

Para maganda talaga maging quality nung music, they recommend a Nokia Headset or Nokia Bluetooth Headset. I forgot the models pero eto yung ginamit na pang demo nung mga promo girls. Malayo talaga quality using the headset included sa package. Ni recommend nya Sennheiser PX-100, PX-100W or PX-101.

Baka naghang?!?

So no choice din ako kundi bumalik sa Nokia Store. Alisin na lang daw yung battery to reset the phone.

That time pareho nakalagay sa bulsa namin yung phones.

Napansin din namin mahina yung speaker nya kaya sa call we can't hardly hear yung kausap namin. Lalo na kung nasa open or public place kayo even using the headset na kasama medyo mahina kahit na adjust na namin yung volume.

Nung ibalik namin sa Nokia Store sabi nya baka daw sa software yung problema kasi pareho nangyari sa units namin. So sabi ako anong gagawin natin dyan eh halos wala pang 24hrs kung ginagamit!?!

Pati customer service very poor!?! Lalo na yung nasa lobby walang ginawa kundi mag internet at makipag telebabad!!! Kaya pala lagi busy yung hotline nila!!!

After checking the items, napansin ko palpak yung pagkakabit nung original screen protector at sabi nung customer service ganun daw talaga kasi nilalagyan nila ng adhesive tapes.

While on our way home ulit after ng pagod, medyo naging kampante na ako kasi maganda na response nung units.

Thanks!!!
